Discover Upper Bavaria
Location and surroundings
Munich is beautiful. But despite this, it is sometimes nice to leave the city. After all, the Alps are practically on your doorstep. You can reach Garmisch-Partenkirchen quickly by train and from there you can conveniently take the cable car to Germany’s highest peak, the Zugspitze, and allow the breathtaking panorama to work its magic. The numerous idyllic swimming lakes with their crystal-clear water are also worth a visit. South of Munich, you can find Lake Starnberg, for example, and the Ammersee. Both can even be reached on the S-Bahn. Further south, you can enjoy the Tegernsee in a picture-perfect mountainous setting. And Upper Bavaria is a real El Dorado for castle lovers, too, because the sublime mother of all fairy tale castles, Neuschwanstein, is located near Füssen. We owe Neuschwanstein and other opulent castles to Bavarian king Ludwig II, who met a tragic end in Lake Starnberg.
