Oktoberfest is the largest public festival in the world and, every year in September, becomes a unique attraction for residents and tourists from all around the world. Believe it or not, the around six million visitors a year consume approx. 60,000 hectolitres of delicious beer and 500,000 roast chickens.
Oktoberfest has been held on the 31 hectare Theresienwiese below the Bavaria Statue since 1810 and is a quintessential part of Munich just as the blue-and-white sky is part of Bavaria. The global popularity of the Wiesn, as residents of Munich call Oktoberfest, is also reflected in the fact that it is frequently copied. So today there are Oktoberfests in the USA, Australia, Canada, Russia, Brazil, and even in Japan and China.
